Fertility Yoga
Yoga can be used as an alternative therapy to treat many things, including infertility. Yoga is often recommended by both medical and holistic practitioners as a complimentary option to do alongside other treatments when struggling with infertility.
‘Any exercise that involves mindfulness, breathing techniques and meditative visualisation has many physical, emotional and mental benefits. Yoga is a calming antidote to any woman (or man) consumed by an overwhelming desire for a baby, the resulting stress of which becomes an impediment to conception itself.’
Zita West, founder of the largest holistic fertility clinic in the UK

The science bit…
Our bodies have two systems when it comes to health and wellbeing – physiological health and reproductive health.
The physiological health system is basically in control of how our body functions every day, ensuring we stay alive, fighting off illness, removing toxins, maintaining homeostasis and generally keep well.
The reproductive health system is our secondary system. It includes things like our reproductive organs and endocrinology system too.
Our physiological health system, quite rightly, takes priority over the reproductive health system when it comes to where and how energy is spent on maintaining and repairing the various aspects of each. This means, if the body is spending all its energy repairing and maintaining this first system, it’s quite likely that our secondary system, the reproductive health system, will take the hit, getting ignored and therefore it possibly may not function as well as it should do when required.
Many things can affect our physiological health every day – from general bugs or viruses, to ingesting toxins such as alcohol and sugar, to stress triggered by work or anxiety.
By ensuring our physiological health is in tip top shape, we can then start to work towards improving our reproductive help. Yoga can help with both.
Benefits of Yoga for Fertility
Yoga, as a type of exercise is hugely beneficial for the mind, helping with relaxation, calming anxiety and releasing stress and anger. It doesn’t stress the body, actually enables the body to repair whilst moving – perfect for those types of people who can’t sit still and struggle to relax!
Other benefits of yoga include:
Nourishes vital organs
Using movement and breath, yoga improves general blood flow and circulation. Oxygen is a key ingredient when it comes to carrying nutrients around the body and transferring them into the cells as needed. If this is increased along with better blood flow, more nutrients can be carried and transferred, repairing the body faster and providing better nourishment where needed.
Helps remove toxins from the body
Better blood flow and circulation also allows for faster toxin removal. Therefore, yoga can also help boost your immune system too. Certain yoga poses are brilliant for speeding up and enabling this transfer process.
Yoga can also help to unblock energy flows, aid digestion, and clear other adhesions and blockages in reproductive areas.
Balances Hormones
Yoga can “reset” your endocrine system and balance your hormones. This combined with better nourishment and less toxins your body will give your reproductive health system every fighting chance!
Clears the mind and calms anxiety
Yoga is a form of active meditation, helping clear and calm the mind. You probably have a million and one thoughts and worries going through your minds during this time. Practicing yoga can give you the space you need to switch off and be calm – even if it’s just for that hour. It is important to take time for yourself and enjoy the present – a clear mind is generally less anxious and more calm, so yoga can enable this to happen.
Relieves stress
Stress and other associated health problems can easily be triggered by our busy modern day lifestyles. Yoga is one of the best forms of stress relief out there! Taking just 1 hour a week to your self can have a hugely positive impact on your mental and physical wellbeing.
