A fun little project that I would like to invite my students to join me on…
Working through the Ashtanga Yoga Series
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a series of six sequences, each of which has a set order of poses ranging in difficulty, starting with a primary series which is mostly made up of beginner level postures right up to the way up to the more advanced postures (some of which even I could only dream of achieving right now)
The idea is you work your way through each series of postures until you reach a posture that you cannot do. At that point you stop there and go back to the start until you can do that posture, then you can continue on to the next stage.
Each series begins with Surya Namaskara (Sun Salutations) 5 of the A variation and 5 of the B variation, this will be used as the class warm-up for that day and then followed by the standing sequence.
All the series end with the same finishing sequence. It is only the middle section which has a different group of asanas and focuses depending on the series.
Ashtanga Yoga Series Project Format
My plan is each week to focus on one series, gradually building in difficulty…
Weeks 1-3 will be achievable for most students who have some yoga practice under their belts already, and so in these weeks, we will move through the postures together.
Weeks 4-6 will be more of a workshop style format. We will warm-up and cool down/finish our practice together but the middle section of the class will be working individually.
